Nyaruziga Wetland Restoration
The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Water and Environment, Alfred Okot Okidi has said that government is soon coming up with a programme to compensate the occupant of the critically degraded wetlands which were obtained before the 1995 Uganda Constitution.
Okot Okidi was recently in Bushenyi district at the function of the launch of the restoration of wetlands in the region, and majorly Nyaruzinga Wetland, the function that was held at Ruyonza Bushenyi Teachers College playground, a programme being supported by Green Climate Fund under United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
He said that according to the President’s directive, all the people who currently have activities that degrade the wetlands to vacate them, as government designs a programme to compensate those who acquired such lands before 1995 constitution.
The District Chairperson Bushenyi, Jafari Basajabalaba, said one of the challenges faced by the district has been inadequate funding by central government to district Natural resources department which has left some department activities un done among other challenges
Katate Vicent, the District Environment officer, also the focal person for the program in the district said that the Nyaruzinga wetland is a crucial wetland that traverses number of sub Counties, with a lot of activities being done within, and the major source of water supply to National Water and Sewerage Corporation
