Bushenyi District commemorates breastfeeding week

Bushenyi District has joined the rest of the world to mark the international breastfeeding week under the Theme “Empower parents. Enable breastfeeding”


The day is commemorated in the first week of August every year globally, although the district scheduled it in the last week.


The function was presided over by the Member of Parliament for Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality, Hon Arinda Gordon Cowboy recently at St Kagwa Play grounds.


He said that major factors affecting the development of a child’s brain include lack of breastfeeding, giving a child un balanced food and being violent to the children.


The District Chairperson Bushenyi Jafari Basajabalaba said that the district has been one of the districts with very high malnutrition in children in the past years but said that the condition is enormously improving due to a number of interventions.


Nyamweya Nancy, the district nutrition focal person, nutrition programme said that the emphasis is not only on breastfeeding but mothers to attend Antenatal, utilizing health units while pregnant and time of delivery and then breastfeeding well.


The Deputy Chief Administrative officer Bushenyi, Edith Turyasasirwa called on men to provide for their wives during pregnancy and breastfeeding periods for their healthy lives.


Peace Tibakuna, Secretary for social service Bushenyi Local Government, hailed the activities done during breastfeeding week, where she said that in last year’s activities, she identified the malnourished twins in Ibaare Sub County in Bushenyi, who were at the verge of death, but were taken up by the district and are progressing well.


The Executive Director Abamugisha Community, an organization in Bushenyi district with community public affairs, Katusiime encouraged women to breastfeed saying that the attachment ft a child to the mother comes from that breast.


 The function was characterized by inspecting the exhibitions demonstrating the type of food children should be feed on at their stages of development and how the foods should be prepared to maintain their nutritional values.


There were also competitions for pilling bananas for men showing that, men have the capacity to prepare a meal for their children in the absence of their mothers and giving certificates to the best performing health workers.
